Ixia
Ixia Mixed
Ixia bulbs are South African natives and among the showiest spring-flowering plants for bold, vibrant colour. They produce masses of starry blooms held on tall, wiry stems, creating an eye-catching display through spring and into early summer. Growing to around 80 to 100 cm tall, they’re brilliant for borders and cutting gardens, adding height without heaviness.
Planting guide
-
Position: choose a sunny, drier spot with excellent drainage
-
Soil: plant into well-worked soil
-
Planting depth: 4 to 5 cm
-
Spacing: 6 to 8 cm apart
For the best impact, plant Ixia in generous groups so the flowers form a colourful, swaying drift.
Ixia Bulbs are perfect for New Zealand’s hot climates, but can be grown in most areas if planted under roof overhangs to restrict water, while still allowing the full sun conditions.
Ixia’s should be planted in sheltered areas of the garden to avoid the flowers toppling over.
