🔥 Gloriosa rothschildiana – The Climbing Flame Lily
If your garden needs a bit of theatre, Gloriosa rothschildiana is your headliner. With fiery red petals edged in gold, swept back like flames in the wind, and dramatic protruding stamens, this tropical climber doesn’t just bloom—it performs.
• 🌞 Loves the sun – thrives in warm, sheltered spots with free-draining soil
• 🌱 Height – climbs 1–2 metres with ease, using tendrils to latch onto trellises, shrubs, or even tomato cages
• 💐 Blooms – up to 30 flowers per tuber, typically from December through January
• 🧬 Double growing points – each tuber sends up two stems, doubling the drama
• 🪴 Great in pots or borders – ideal for patios, conservatories, or vertical garden designs
Plant the tubers flat, about 10 cm deep, and give them something to climb. These lilies are fast movers—not shy, not subtle, and absolutely worth the space.
Whether you're chasing tropical vibes or just want something a bit weird and wonderful, Gloriosa rothschildiana is a show-off in the best possible way
Gloriosa Tubers can be planted anytime from September through to the end of December.
- First things first- you need to find a nice, sunny spot in your garden with good drainage... ensuring that it's in an area for all to see!
- Loosen the soil to a depth of 15cm, and plant the 2 legged Tubers flat (horizontally) - cover your Tubers with around 10cm of soil.
- Tubers love to be fertilized, so a handful of general purpose fertilizer, or our special Bulb Food is advised.
