Freesia Burtonii is a much-loved, old-fashioned freesia grown for its beautiful perfume and elegant, creamy-white blooms with warm yellow to orange markings in the throat. It’s a New Zealand heritage selection (a sport/mutation from Freesia refracta alba), often remembered from classic cottage gardens, and it makes a standout cut flower thanks to its strong scent and clean, luminous colouring.

Expect slender stems carrying sprays of flowers above narrow, iris-like foliage, typically around 20–40 cm tall (most commonly in the mid-range depending on conditions).

Best for: pots and borders, picking, planting near paths and doors for fragrance
Flowering: late winter to spring (commonly early spring in NZ gardens)
Growing notes: plant corms in a sunny, well-drained spot and protect from hard frosts for best results.

Freesia Bulbs are easy to grow, and thrive in sunny, well drained positions, but need protection from frosts.

Plant your Freesia bulbs in well worked soil, 5-6cm deep and 8-10cm apart. To keep clumps together, why not use one of our bulb protection baskets and place it just below the surface of the soil.
